Today girl, I’m going to share with you some wisdom that I NEEDED when I was in a dark place emotionally and mentally. You ready?
In my last blog post, we talked about the power of hope and I shared with you what hopes of mine that really helped to pull me through a difficult season. But today, I want to talk to you about something that I cannot stress enough, and that’s the importance of leaning on your community to get you through hard times.
DON’T STOP READING because I have wisdom for you that may bless you for the rest of your life. Bold right? But I say this confidently because it has definitely helped me today.
Amor, you need to choose to lean on your community in times of mental and emotional distress because THEY CAN HOLD THE TRUTH DOWN FOR YOU when you can’t.
Let’s take a look at the story we’ve been looking at:
“As He (Jesus) got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But He was sleeping. So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die! But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith? ” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea. And there was a great calm.The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? — even the winds and the sea obey Him! ” (Matthew 8: 23- 27)
When reading this passage of scripture, I couldn’t help but think man, what would have happened if the disciples on the boat turned and encouraged each other, and reminded each other of who it was that was on the boat with them?
Maybe they wouldn’t have acted so much in faithlessness and fearfulness. Just maybe.
I have learned that I cannot trust all of my thoughts when I am struggling emotionally and mentally, like facing anxiety, for example, and I need my friends to bring me back to hope AND reality.
HALT is an acronym used to describe physiological states that make us more susceptible to self-destructive behaviors (link below). I found that when I am not feeling well mentally, emotionally, or even physically, my thoughts of insecurities, doubts, and fears run so much wilder in my mind. Can you relate?
For me, I learned that it is so vital to reach out to people in my times of struggle and in my HALT moments. We all have them, don’t we? Friends are capable to be strong and level headed in moments when we aren’t.
I remember sweet moments when my friends in college held me through my hard times and consoled me in ways that I did not have the strength to console myself with truth. Their fresh eyes combated lies that I was believing about myself, my life, God, and the world. I look back and notice that they played a tremendous role on my journey of healing and flourishing.
So amor, who can you reach out to to speak truth into your life during your storm? Even if you aren’t in a hard time now, thinking about the people that you can run to if and when those times happen can really be a powerful way to prepare yourself for healing and hope. Who do you know can speak sound truth to you and give you the wisdom that you need in times of struggle? I really genuinely do want to know <3.
