James 1: 19-25: Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak, Slow to get Angry

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (James 1:19-25)

Hey Chicka! Welcome back to SHEISALLIN, where I get to share with YOU what God is teaching ME through James! Let’s get into it!

Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

This week, the Lord truly spoke to me about this verse in scripture that was very different than the way that I have previously understood it. This verse is wise instruction and good to follow as women in our everyday living, but the Lord truly put it in my heart that this verse is beautiful to apply when we approach scripture.

As women, there are so many passages in the Word that, if we could be honest, get us angry, right? There are always passages in scripture, this word that was placed in our hearts and has the power to save our souls, that we may find really hard to submit to and obey.

But like God revealed to me through last week’s reading, He has really good intentions for His instructions for us. So I wonder what it would look like if we approached scripture being really quick to listen to what God is saying and has to say to us personally, being slow to speak and interject our own ideas for God’s, and being slow to get angry with what He may be saying to us? It would be powerful, right?

Struggling to Obey?

So this week amor, where are you struggling to obey God’s Word or what God may be speaking to you? Are you struggling with forgiving your friend? Loving a peer? Serving those God has called you to serve in whatever way?

Today, I know that God is urging me to trust in HIs goodness and the goodness of the “perfect law that sets me free,” the Gospel. Sometimes, I just don’t want to study his scripture, or don’t want to call my family and be intentional in our relationships, or don’t want to share Jesus with someone God may be calling me to reach out to.

Let the Transformation Happen

But i’ve got to make room in my heart for His word and allow Him to transform me as I live a life in accordance to what HE desires for me.

So let’s do this together and seek after Him together. Let’s set our minds and hearts on receiving His word, and living it out.

Sending you buckets of love,
